The 13th SANKOFA THEATRE FESTIVAL returns with prequel historic drama; How It All Started: The Green Book Chronicles
THE SANKOFA THEATRE FESTIVAL, the Flower City's longest running Black playwright showcase, returns with an August spotlight on an historical drama. The historical drama is a prequel to Karen Culley's other two full-length Green Book Chronicles stage productions. How It All Started, sees the Greer Family at the beginning of their journey. The birth of Nathan and the unfolding of events culminate with the start of a restaurant. In 1910, Greer and Lilly used part of their home with hopes of expanding to real space. July 4, 1910, marks the momentous fight between Jack Johnson and Jim Jefferies in "The Great White Hope." However, the Black Community fears the consequences of a Johnson win and what it will mean for their citizens. The emergence of the NAACP, Boy Scouts, racial violence, and Women's Suffrage weave a story of how Black Folk were determined to push forward and dared to create a life and a culture all their own.
About the Company Founded in 2007 by artistic director Curtis Rivers, of MMB Theatre 1 Project, the SANKOFA THEATRE FESTIVAL has expanded and retracted at time from a single day to a two week festival with a variety of themes, plays and art forms. "The inception of the festival was to provide African American playwrights room to expand and mature their literary artistry in a nuturing environment."~ Curtis Rivers, Sankofa Theatre Festival Founder
