Shared Program: Hanlon + Ornelas 1
New works from Hanlon Dance & Company and “Tectonic Dances” by Ruben T. Ornelas
ERAN HANLON is Artistic Director of HANLON DANCE & COMPANY, founded in Rochester, NY over 10 years ago. As a multi-media dance theatre troupe of collaborating dance artists, including the tenure of Nanako Horikawa Mandrino, Alaina Olivieri & Julie Schlafer Rossette, the company utilizes the platform of live performance to communicate the connection of nature and humanity with resonance capable of touching the hearts and souls of audience members.
RUBEN T. ORNELAS writes: "Tectonic Dances” concerns itself with the beautiful and deadly terrain of the U.S. southern border. By having dancers perform in tandem with the film "Tectonics" by Peter Bo Rappmund, the border is evoked as a place of inhabited, shared experience, alongside its perils. My hope is that by humanizing these environments audiences will reflect on the motivation and experiences of those who feel compelled to cross the border at any cost. What are the underlying causes? What is our shared responsibility to address them? By creating a space for empathy, “Tectonic Dances” seeks to awaken in audiences an awareness of our relationship to each other, and the land we share.
