Welcome to the 11th Annual Sankofa Theatre Festival.

$15 advance / $20 at the door

Also available: $48 festival pass, which gives you entry to all Sankofa Festival performances.

An annual festival primarily of local: playwrights, actors, and directors that come together for two weeks of theatrical fun. The format consists of a mainstage show the first week, The GreenBook Chronicles, and supporting shows the following week, Night of Tens, The Circle, and Now & Then.

Open Mic: 11th Season of Sankofa Celebrates Douglass, Homegrown Talent

City of Rochester 2018: Celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Frederick Douglass

All shows are 7:30 PM nightly with one 2 PM matinee on 9/1 followed by a talkback with the cast. You won't want to miss these two weeks of theatrical expression.

WEEK ONE

The Green Book Chronicles Wed Aug 29 7:30 PM, Thur Aug 30 7:30 PM, Fri Aug 31 7:30 PM, Sat Sept 1 2:00 PM, Sat Sept 1 7:30PM

In the early 1900s when the US was plagued with Jim Crow and Black Code laws, African Americans sought ways to express their freedoms. From 1936 to 1966, "The Negro Traveler's Green Book" was published as a guidebook to navigate African Americans to safe zones during their travels. The Greers' Lilly Inn was one such Black-owned inn listed in the Green Book that catered to Black travelers during this period. Caught between trying to run a family business and providing better opportunities for their children, the Greers must resolve personal conflicts while navigating through racism.

WEEK TWO

Night of Tens Tues Sept 4 7:30 PM

Local playwrights, actors, and directors and YOU come together for an evening of 10-minute plays. Only ten minutes and "lights out" for each play. This year's genre is COMEDY. Come to see all the creativity before "light's out." After all how hard could ten minutes be? We will find out at the Night of Tens.

The Circle Wed Sept 5 & Fri Sept 7 7:30 PM Nightly

What happens when Waiting to Exhale meets The Book Club? The Circle: A Book Club Sisterhood. When six women gather to discuss the latest book of intrigue and romance, they start to realize that the real drama isn't on the pages they have read. When groups form, there is bound to be some jealousy within the ranks. When that jealousy gets 'thick,' it threatens the stability of the group as the participants take sides and try to weather the impending storms. The Circle has all the zest of a communal meal with none of the calories.

Then & Now Thur & Sat Sept 6 & 8 7:30 PM Nightly

As much as some Souls just should not be together, for some reason they cannot stay away from one another. In 1865, eight Souls find themselves in the same space with deadly results. In 1945, the same Souls find themselves together again, and again they happen upon disastrous results.

Now & Then spirits that are having a human experience find themselves having more than one Human Experience with similar results. You will laugh, you will cry, you will be angry, and you will question what is happening in the universe. Here is one option to consider, Now & Then.
