Will these first impressions go down in history as the ultimate meet-up or as a run-in with the stranger from hell? You decide.

Commotion Dance Theater returns to Fringe with two new works. “Fairy Tales of Our Own Devising” is a triptych of surreal dances directed by Laurie MacFarlane and created in collaboration with three composers and three visual artists. The piece opens a window into a fantastic and mysterious universe. Ruben T. Ornelas presents an inter-disciplinary work using dance and film that portrays the U.S./Mexico borderlands as a place of shared, lived experience.

Soprano Kerri Lynn Slominski and pianist Alex Kuczynski bring Francis Poulenc’s operatic monodrama, "La voix humaine," to life. Sung in French with English translation provided.

Womba Africa Drumming and Dance

Womba Africa is a cultural drum and dance group formed in the town of Nungua. The members are part of the Ga Adangbe People in greater Accra, Ghana, a tribe with a very rich history and culture quite distinct from other major ethnic groups. The Womba Africa band typically performs with the Ga language because almost all members are from Nungua, a Ga speaking community.

The Velvet Noose

Shadow work and dramaturgical studies come together in an immersive, experiential performance of live-action, Tarot card enactments. Audience members receive limited-edition, hand-inked cards on arrival. As screams from darkness announce drawn cards, the inanimate animates, initiating transfixing improvisations and sequenced theatrics. Gongs create the evolving score, informed by mindful, sound-bath resonance healing. "The Velvet Noose" builds upon last year’s sold-out performance in direct narrative continuation with two ambitious performances.
